Deep's mission statement is 'the sound of sound' which offers a pretty wide range of recorded material to draw from. Four djs operate a loosely based four week turnaround which means each week the show sounds quite different from the last.

10/05/11 - John - Playlist - Ambient Roots

The show set out to trace the early development of ambient music from when the genre was first named by Brian Eno in the cover notes to his 1975 release, 'Discreet Music'. It pretty much turned into an Eno retrospective as most of the early ambient records were his creations and co-creations. The sounds ranged over a twenty year period from 1973's 'No Pussyfooting' with Robert Fripp to 1993's 'Neroli', arguably the most ambient ambient release of all and a definite pinnacle of the ideal. Named after a fragrance, the sound colors the environment like incense.

  1. Paul-Marie Verlaine's "Art poétique", from Jadis et naguère (1884)

    • De la musique avant toute chose,
    Et pour cela préfère l'Impair
Plus vague et plus soluble dans l'air
Sans rien en lui qui pèse ou qui pose.

    • Let's hear the music first and foremost,
And that means no more one-two-one-twos…
Something more vague instead, something lighter
Dissolving in air, weightless as air.

    A prophecy to/for ambient music? From 1884!
Oh your furniture music Satie, and your Eno's ticking vapourscapes, abloom, abloom, you fetching things!
